The eBay Find That Might Become a Long-Term Camera Review
Some cameras are planned purchases. Others appear at the right time, at the right price, and make you curious enough to take the punt.
That is how I ended up with the Leica MD2.
As a long-time eBay user and seller, I have a habit of keeping certain search terms saved. Leica is one of them. I am always half-looking, not always with the intention of buying, but watching what comes up, seeing what the market is doing, and occasionally finding something interesting.
Delivery Day...
The delivery was fast, arriving at my door within two days. When I opened the package, my first impression was positive. The camera felt really good in the hand. It is light, but still solid. The matte black finish immediately stood out to me. It has a quiet, understated look that suits the simplicity of the camera.
Early Impressions
Compared with my Leica M3, the MD2 feels less refined. The main thing I noticed straight away was the advance lever. The winding action feels a bit harder and not as smooth as the M3. That does not make it feel poorly made, but it does remind you that the M3 has a different level of mechanical polish.
Even with that comparison, the MD-2 still feels very solidly built. It works well, feels dependable, and has that simple Leica quality that makes you want to pick it up and use it.
No finder no problem
One of the biggest surprises so far is the lack of a viewfinder. I thought this might bother me more. In reality, I am already seeing why it could work for the way I like to shoot.
I tend to shoot wide. Most of the time, I am drawn to 21mm, 28mm, and 35mm lenses. Because of that, not having a built-in viewfinder does not feel like the limitation I expected it to be. If anything, the camera seems to suit that looser, wider way of seeing.
There is something interesting about a camera that removes options instead of adding them. No viewfinder. No unnecessary distractions. Just a simple body that asks you to understand your lens, your distance, and your frame.
At this stage, these are only early thoughts. I have not used the camera enough to form a final opinion, but that is the point of this journal. I want to document the first impressions now, before use and familiarity soften them. Then, over time, I can see whether this camera becomes a genuinely useful tool or just an interesting Leica body that caught my eye on eBay.
For now, the MD-2 has already done something important.
It has made me focused...
